Vinyl Siding

Why Homeowners Choose Vinyl Siding

Vinyl is the most common siding in Southern Maryland for good reasons. It doesn't need painting, it handles humid summers without rotting, and it comes in a wide range of colors, profiles and textures. From 1970s ramblers and split-levels to newer colonials and townhomes, a well-installed vinyl job can make a house look new and cut down on exterior maintenance for years.

But vinyl is only as good as the installation. Siding is a rain screen, not a waterproof skin. Water will get behind it in a wind-driven storm, so what matters is the house wrap, window and door flashing, and trim details underneath. Vinyl also expands and contracts with temperature, so it has to be nailed loosely in the center of the slots with room to move. Get those details wrong and you'll see buckling, rattling panels or hidden rot.

HomePro Contractors installs new vinyl siding, replaces damaged sections and matches existing siding where we can. We work throughout Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's and Prince George's counties.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Siding Needs Attention

Some siding problems are cosmetic. Others mean water is already getting into the wall. Here's what to watch for.

  • Cracked or broken panelsHail, flying debris and lawn equipment can crack vinyl, especially in cold weather.
  • Warping or bucklingWavy panels usually mean they were nailed too tight to expand and contract.
  • Loose or missing piecesStrong winds from storms and nor'easters can unlock panels that weren't secured well.
  • Soft spots in the wallPressing in and feeling give can mean rotted sheathing behind the siding.
  • Mold or mildew streaksShaded, damp walls collect growth, and stains near trim can signal trapped moisture.
  • Faded, chalky colorOlder vinyl loses its color in full sun and won't match replacement pieces.

What Damages Vinyl Siding

Wind: gusts from summer thunderstorms, nor'easters and tropical remnants catch loose panel edges and pull them out of their locks. Homes near the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent and Potomac rivers take more of that wind.

Heat and poor nailing: vinyl moves with temperature. Panels nailed tight against the wall can't slide, so they bow and wave on hot days. Dark siding on south and west walls is especially prone to it.

Impact: hail, falling limbs and even string trimmers can crack panels. Vinyl is more brittle in cold weather, so winter impacts do more damage.

Water behind the wall: missing house wrap, poorly flashed windows and trim that dumps water behind the siding can rot the sheathing while the vinyl still looks fine from the outside.

Our Process

How We Install Vinyl Siding

  1. Walk the house with you, check the walls and help choose profile and color
  2. Remove old siding where needed and repair any soft sheathing
  3. Install house wrap and flash windows, doors and penetrations
  4. Hang siding and trim with proper nailing and expansion gaps
  5. Final inspection, cleanup and photos of the finished work

Siding Profiles, Trim and Insulated Options

Vinyl comes in several looks, including traditional lap, Dutch lap, board and batten, and shake-style accents for gables. Thicker panels resist wind and impact better and lie flatter on the wall. Insulated vinyl, with a foam backing, adds rigidity and some extra comfort, and can be a good choice on walls that take a beating from the weather.

The trim matters as much as the panels. We install J-channel, corner posts, window and door trim and starter strip so water drains out instead of being trapped. Where siding meets the roof, we make sure kick-out flashing directs water into the gutter and away from the wall. For repairs, we look for the closest match in profile and color and will tell you honestly if a perfect match isn't possible.

Storm-Damaged Siding? We Help With Insurance Claims

If siding was cracked by hail, torn off by wind or hit by a falling limb, it may be covered by your homeowner's insurance. We document the damage with dated photos and measurements and can meet your adjuster on site. We'll also secure exposed walls so water doesn't get in while the claim is open.

Vinyl Siding Questions

Can you replace just a few damaged siding panels?

Yes. We can remove and replace damaged pieces without redoing the whole wall. Matching depends on the profile and how much the old siding has faded, so we'll show you the closest options before we start.

Why is my vinyl siding wavy?

Waves and bulges usually mean the panels were nailed too tight or don't have room to expand at the ends. Heat makes vinyl grow, and if it can't slide, it bows. Re-hanging the affected panels correctly often fixes it.

Do you install house wrap under new siding?

Yes. When we re-side a house, we install house wrap and flash the windows, doors and other openings so water that gets behind the siding drains out instead of reaching the sheathing.

Is insulated vinyl siding worth it?

It adds rigidity, helps panels lie flatter and stand up better to impacts, and provides some added comfort. Whether it's worth the extra cost depends on your walls and goals. We'll walk you through both options.

Does my HOA need to approve new siding?

Many HOAs in Southern Maryland have rules on siding color and style. We recommend checking with your HOA before you choose, and we can provide product details and color samples for your application.
