Soffit & Fascia

What Soffit and Fascia Do for Your Home

Fascia is the board along the edge of your roof that your gutters hang on. Soffit is the underside of the overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Together they close off the roof edge, protect the rafter tails from weather, and, when the soffit is vented, supply the fresh air your attic needs. They're easy to ignore until paint starts peeling, a gutter pulls loose or a squirrel finds its way into the attic.

Most fascia and soffit damage starts with water. A clogged or leaking gutter spills behind the fascia, a missing drip edge lets water wick into the wood, or condensation from a poorly vented attic soaks the boards from inside. In Southern Maryland's humid summers and freeze-thaw winters, painted wood trim breaks down faster than most homeowners expect.

HomePro Contractors replaces rotted fascia and soffit, wraps fascia in aluminum and installs vented vinyl or aluminum soffit for a low-maintenance finish. We work on homes throughout Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's and Prince George's counties.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Soffit and Fascia Need Repair

Damage at the roof edge is easy to spot from the ground once you know what to look for.

  • Peeling or blistering paintPaint that won't stay on the trim often means moisture is getting into the wood.
  • Soft or crumbling woodPress a screwdriver into the fascia; if it sinks in, the board is rotting.
  • Sagging guttersGutters pulling away often means the fascia behind them can't hold a fastener.
  • Gaps or holes at the eavesOpenings let in birds, squirrels, bats and wasps looking for a dry attic.
  • Stains under the overhangDark streaks or water marks on the soffit show water is running where it shouldn't.
  • No visible soffit ventsSolid soffits or painted-over vents can starve the attic of fresh air.

Why Soffit and Fascia Rot

Gutter overflow: when gutters clog or are pitched wrong, water spills over the back edge and soaks the fascia. It's the single most common cause of fascia rot we see.

Missing or short drip edge: without metal drip edge at the roof edge, water rolls off the shingles and wicks back onto the top of the fascia and the roof deck.

Attic moisture: poor ventilation traps warm, wet air in the attic, and it condenses on the rafter tails and the back of the soffit. The wood rots from the inside out.

Weather and pests: salt air and wind-driven rain near the Bay and the rivers wear down paint, and once wood is soft, squirrels and birds chew right through it.

Our Process

How We Repair Soffit and Fascia

  1. Inspect the roof edge, gutters, drip edge and attic side of the eaves
  2. Remove gutters where needed and tear out rotted boards
  3. Replace damaged fascia, soffit framing and rafter tails as needed
  4. Wrap fascia in aluminum and install vented soffit
  5. Rehang gutters, check drip edge, clean up and send photos

Aluminum Wrap and Vented Soffit

After replacing rotted wood with new lumber, we wrap the fascia in custom-bent aluminum coil. The wrap sheds water, never needs painting and comes in colors to match your gutters and trim. Underneath the overhang, we install vinyl or aluminum soffit panels, with vented panels where the attic needs intake air.

We also fix the reason the wood rotted in the first place. That can mean adding or extending drip edge, correcting gutter pitch, clearing blocked soffit vents or adding attic baffles. Wrapping over soft wood just hides the problem, so we always replace damaged boards before covering them.

Do It With Your Gutters or Roof

Soffit and fascia work fits naturally with a gutter replacement or a new roof, because the gutters are already coming down and the roof edge is already open. Planning them together means one crew visit, one cleanup and a roof edge that's sealed top to bottom. If you're already planning one of those projects, ask us to look at the trim at the same time.

Soffit & Fascia Questions

Can you wrap my fascia without replacing the wood?

Only if the wood is solid. Wrapping over rotted fascia traps moisture and the rot keeps spreading underneath. We probe the boards first and replace any soft sections before wrapping.

What's the difference between soffit and fascia?

Fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge where gutters attach. Soffit is the horizontal panel under the overhang. Both protect the rafters, and vented soffit also lets fresh air into the attic.

Do I need vented soffit?

Most homes with a pitched roof and attic do. Soffit vents are the intake half of attic ventilation. Without them, a ridge vent can't pull air through the attic properly.

Animals are getting into my eaves. Can you stop that?

Yes. We replace chewed or rotted boards, close gaps and install solid soffit and wrapped fascia. If animals are living in the attic, have a wildlife professional remove them first so they aren't sealed inside.

Why does my fascia keep rotting?

Usually because water keeps reaching it, from overflowing gutters, missing drip edge or attic condensation. We fix the cause along with the boards so the new trim lasts.
