Gutters That Keep Water Away From Your Home

Gutters have one job: catch the water coming off your roof and carry it away from the house. When they clog, sag or leak at the seams, that water spills over the edge and soaks the fascia, splashes against siding and pools along the foundation. In Southern Maryland, where summer thunderstorms can dump a lot of rain fast and many homes sit under mature hardwoods, gutters that can't keep up are one of the most common causes of exterior damage we see.

Seamless gutters are formed on site from a continuous coil of metal, cut to the exact length of each run. Without seams every few feet, there are far fewer joints to leak, separate or rust. We pair them with properly sized downspouts and solid hangers so they stay straight under the weight of water and ice.

Gutter guards finish the job by keeping leaves, needles and seed pods out while letting water in. HomePro Contractors installs seamless gutters and guards on homes and small commercial buildings throughout Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's and Prince George's counties.

Is It Time?

Signs You Need New Gutters or Guards

If you're on a ladder every fall, or water is going everywhere but the downspout, it's time for a better system.

  • Overflow during stormsWater sheeting over the front edge means clogs, undersized gutters or too few downspouts.
  • Leaking seams and cornersDrips at joints and end caps on sectional gutters that keep coming back after resealing.
  • Sagging or pulling awayLoose spikes or failed hangers let gutters tip and hold standing water.
  • Stained siding or rotted fasciaStreaks below the gutter and soft trim behind it show water is getting where it shouldn't.
  • Water pooling at the foundationShort or disconnected downspouts dump water right next to the house.
  • Cleaning them over and overHomes under oaks and pines can clog several times a season without guards.

Why Gutters Fail in Southern Maryland

Leaves and pine needles: wooded lots are common across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's. Needles mat into a dense layer and leaves pile up at corners and outlets until the downspout backs up.

Heavy summer downpours: a short, intense thunderstorm can deliver more water than an undersized gutter or a single downspout can carry, especially off a steep or large roof section.

Seams and old fasteners: sectional gutters rely on sealant at every joint, and spike-and-ferrule fasteners work loose over time. Each freeze-thaw cycle pushes those weak points a little further.

Ice and debris weight: a gutter full of wet leaves or ice is heavy. Without enough hangers, it bends, pulls the fascia and sends water behind the trim.

Our Process

How We Install Seamless Gutters and Guards

  1. Measure every run and check fascia condition and roof drainage
  2. Repair any rotted fascia before new gutters go up
  3. Form seamless gutters on site to the exact length
  4. Hang with hidden hangers, pitched toward correctly placed downspouts
  5. Install guards, extend downspouts, test flow and clean up

Gutter Sizes, Downspouts and Guard Options

Most homes we work on get 5-inch or 6-inch seamless aluminum K-style gutters. Larger roofs, steep pitches and roof valleys that dump onto one corner often need the extra capacity of 6-inch gutters and oversized downspouts. We pick the size and downspout placement based on how much roof drains to each run, not just what was there before.

For guards, we recommend options that let water in while keeping leaves and needles out, such as fine micro-mesh screens that handle pine needles better than basic perforated covers. No guard is completely maintenance-free, but a good one turns frequent ladder cleanings into an occasional rinse or check. We'll walk you through the choices that make sense for the trees around your house.

Keep Your Gutters Working Year-Round

Even with guards, it's smart to look at your gutters after fall leaf drop and after big storms. Check that downspouts are flowing, extensions are attached and nothing is sitting on top of the guards. If you see overflow, sagging or water stains on the siding, give us a call and we'll take a look before it turns into fascia or foundation damage.

Seamless Gutters & Gutter Guards Questions

What's the difference between seamless and sectional gutters?

Sectional gutters come in short pieces joined with sealant, so every seam is a potential leak. Seamless gutters are formed on site as one continuous piece per run, with joints only at corners and ends.

Do gutter guards really work on pine needles?

Basic screens and perforated covers often let needles slip through or mat on top. Fine micro-mesh guards do a much better job with needles. No guard eliminates all maintenance, but a good one cuts it way down.

Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

It depends on how much roof drains into each gutter and how steep it is. Many homes do fine with 5-inch, while larger or steeper roofs and valley corners benefit from 6-inch gutters with bigger downspouts. We size them after measuring.

Can you add guards to my existing gutters?

If your gutters are in good shape, straight and properly pitched, we can usually add guards. If they're leaking, sagging or undersized, it's better to replace them first so the guards sit on a solid system.

Do you fix rotted fascia when you install gutters?

Yes. New gutters need a solid board to hang on. If we find soft or rotted fascia, we'll show you, replace the damaged sections and wrap them before the gutters go back up.
